Executives from major companies around the world, government representatives, civil society, philanthropists and experts met yesterday at the World Climate Summit, an event organized by World Climate Limited in conjunction with Libélula. The objective of this meeting was to discuss how business can contribute to the fight against global warming.

The meeting was held at the Hilton Hotel in Miraflores and its mission was to generate proposals that include governments, the private sector and international cooperation to contribute to sustainable development and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
Michael Mathres, director of World Climate Limited, commented that this is the fifth version of this event, and that many ideas have been achieved and turned into solutions for cities and regions.

“Governments are the architects who design the blueprints, but it is the companies and experts who provide the bricks to build the structures of tomorrow. From my experience, here we bring together entrepreneurs who want to do something. We are here to say to governments ‘we have some solutions, and we are ready to do business’.”.

Jens Nielsen, founder and CEO of Word Climate Ltd., said that the most important thing about this event is to convince governments that it is possible to grow and create jobs by betting on ‘green’ initiatives. He also highlighted the great interest of the national business community in what is being proposed here.
“If you want to be a leader in your industry, you have to make it sustainable. Because future generations will demand, not only from those in power, but also from companies, to be concerned about caring for the environment,” he stressed.

Important announcements in power generation

The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Energy and Mines (MEM), Eleodoro Mayorga, who said that the effects of global warming are evident and that policies are being designed to reduce this effect, while continuing to grow economically.

“From MEM's perspective, the perspective is to gradually change the energy matrix to cleaner energy, use the diversity of resources we have, maintain our competitiveness and decouple growth from emissions. We have a good amount of hydroelectricity, the possibility of generating through wind, sun and we have natural gas at lower prices”.

He revealed that today, 54% of Peru's electricity matrix is generated by renewable energy and 62% by conventional energy (natural gas), and said that the goal for the end of the decade is that 60% of electricity will come from clean sources.

He also referred to the need to expand access to electricity, since, according to him, one out of every four Peruvians in rural areas does not benefit from it. In this sense, he announced that the energy service from photovoltaic sources has already been awarded, which will allow 500 thousand new installations in the next 3 years.
