The Ministry of the Environment (MINAM) launched today the Climate Commitment Week to continue the path traced last year during COP20/CMP10, through a participatory, planned and organized initiative towards COP21 in Paris.

“The Climate Commitment Weeks are spaces for reflection, debate and information exchange aimed at highlighting Peru's climate responsibility in its different roles. The idea is that a solid team can arrive in Paris with a leadership role for Peru in the climate debate”.”, The Minister of the Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, explained that Peru's actions are an essential part of achieving a climate agreement at the next COP21 in Paris.

To kick off this Climate Commitment Week, a forum was held: “Importance and Need for a Climate Change Law”, which was attended by the Minister of Environment Manuel Pulgar-Vidal; Daniel Abugattas, congressman and representative of the Globe Peru Working Group; María Isabel Ortíz, congresswoman and representative of Globe International Mexico; Federico Pariona, congressman and President of the Commission of Andean Amazonian and Afro-Peruvian Peoples, Environment and Ecology and Manuel Dammert, congressman and President of the Commission of Decentralization, Local Governments and Modernization of State Management.

The purpose of the Forum was to analyze and share experiences on the need and importance of having a legal mandate on Climate Change to strengthen climate governance, as a precedent that can contribute to international negotiations in their global effort to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Experiences from Latin America were shared, such as the implementation of the Climate Change Law in Mexico by María Isabel Ortíz, who emphasized the need to have a law that can be linked to city planning, as well as to integrate specialized working groups through the identification of needs and objectives.

The importance of a Climate Change law lies in guiding the country towards a low GHG emissions economy and setting an example for other nations, thus promoting innovation, research and scientific/technological development for the good of society.
