In Peru, 2 out of every 10 children suffer from chronic malnutrition and 2.3 million people live in food insecurity. In this scenario, food donation is an option to alleviate the food needs of the most economically vulnerable people in the country.

Through non-profit institutions such as food banks, trading companies and food producers can donate food that has lost its commercial value, but is fit for human consumption. Currently, Supermercados Peruanos, which groups the PlazaVea and Vivanda supermarket chains, is working together with Banco de Alimentos Perú to provide food to the people who need it most.

"We decided to contact the Food Bank to see the possibility of making donations to the neediest people. The Food Bank is a new organization in Peru and no supermarket had worked with them before, however we decided to go for the initiative since we believe 100% in it. That is why we began to work on developing internal procedures, training, among other actions to ensure that our food in good condition reach as many vulnerable people as possible."Estefanie Martens, Sustainability Manager of Supermercados Peruanos, commented.

PlazaVea started a pilot plan with 3 of its stores in November 2015, which consisted of donating fruits and vegetables. Then in April of this year the plan was expanded to 12 stores and in June to 18.

"We are very enthusiastic about the fact that the pilot plan is working. We continue to train our employees to continue making donations through the Food Bank. We hope to continue incorporating stores to the pilot plan both in Lima and in the provinces in order to reach more and more people every day."Estefanie Martens explained.

Among the plans of the supermarket chain and the Food Bank is to make donations through PlazaVea stores in the provinces, starting in Cusco and Arequipa.
