Latin American countries trained to develop technology action plans

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), on behalf of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)  is implementing the second phase of the "Technology Needs Assessments" (TNA) project, which will benefit 26 countries in Latin America, including Belize, Bolivia, Grenada, Guyana, Honduras, Panama and Uruguay, which will be able to identify their technological needs in mitigation and adaptation.

Jorge Rogat, coordinator of the project for Latin America and the Caribbean, told Libélula that the objective is that at the end of the three-day TNA workshop, which is being held from July 1-3 in Lima, participants from the different countries can begin to implement technologies in their own realities.

"It is important because we are providing nations with the necessary training so that they have the necessary capabilities to develop action plans and implement projects with a focus on mitigation and adaptation. In addition, the project is being observed on the international political agenda and by the United Nations Secretariat on climate change, who are closely familiar with the effective work of Libélula as a regional center of excellence.", he said.

Teamwork  

UNEP contracted two regional centers of excellence on mitigation and adaptation issues to carry out the "Technology Needs Assessments" project, which was the first of its kind in the region. Bariloche Foundation and Libélula, which have developed adaptation and mitigation programs and also know the reality of the region, which allows them to have a more comprehensive vision of the current climate change problem.

The first phase of the project was developed from 2009 to 2011 and the second phase will be from this year to 2017, and a total of 60 countries worldwide have benefited.

Pía Zevallos, Libélula's Creation and Development Manager, indicated that Libélula has positioned itself as a committed company that helps countries to become increasingly resilient and to generate a low-carbon development, contributing with an environment of trust, which will allow for a successful process in the evaluation of technological needs.
