Today, humanity has exhausted the natural resources that the planet can regenerate in one year.

  • So far this year, we have consumed the resources that our Planet can regenerate in 12 months.
  • In the last fifteen years, this date has been shortened by 3 months.

Today is Earth Overshoot Day, when human consumption exceeds the regenerative capacity of our natural resources. In the span of a year, our Planet can generate a limited amount of resources. Today we are consuming these resources faster than they can regenerate. In eight months we have consumed what the Planet can give us in twelve months. In recent years, this date has been shortening, being October in 2000 and August this year.

Global Footprint Network measures the demand for the planet's natural resources and compares it to nature's ability to supply this demand, a process known as biocapacity. For the remainder of this year, the planet will be in "ecological deficit", meaning that we will be using up our reserves for the future.

The WWF estimates that by the year 2050, the global population could reach 9 billion inhabitants, which added to our growing consumption habits will put more pressure on the natural resources we use.

According to the Global Footprint Network, if global carbon emissions are reduced by at least 30 % below current levels by 2030, Earth Overshoot Day could become September 16. A positive example and one that should encourage us all is Denmark, which reduced its emissions over the past two decades. If everyone had done the same, Earth Overshoot Day would be October 3 this year.

Planet Earth is our only home, and we are asking more of it than it can give us. A small change in our habits can make a huge difference. We have an important task ahead of us; we must build a world where we can all live within our ecological limits.
