Lima, July 21, 2021. In Peru's bicentennial year, climate action continues to grow in the development of our country's management. Proof of this is the recognition received by the Carbon Footprint Peru tool as best practice in the Effective Environmental Management category, Information Systems subcategory.
"The Carbon Footprint Peru is the best practice for the effort to generate a collaborative mechanism for the measurement and disclosure of achievements in the reduction of GHG emissions by public and private organizations," said Carmen Masías, representative of the jury of the NGO Ciudadanos al Día, at the time of announcing the Minam's tool as the winner.
The Carbon Footprint Peru tool is supported by the Project for the Implementation of Peru's Climate Targets, also known as the NDC Support Programme, which is implemented by Minam, with technical assistance from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and is part of the International Climate Protection Initiative (IKI).
Carbon Footprint Peru recognizes the efforts of the private sector and public institutions in reducing GHG emissions, as established in the Paris Agreement. To date, 481 organizations have registered, 214 organizations have reported their carbon footprint and 39 have verified it. Likewise, 15 organizations have already reduced their carbon footprint and 7 have neutralized it.
It is estimated that the tool has led to the reporting of more than 11 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2eq) from 170 organizations, as well as the reduction of about 30 thousand tCO2eq, which is equivalent to the energy consumption of 105,685 households in one year in Metropolitan Lima. In this way, we promote a change in production and consumption patterns of organizations, through effective environmental management towards the sustainability of their activities for the benefit of the population and their ecosystems.
Minam thanks all public and private organizations that are already part of the Carbon Footprint Peru, promoting effective environmental management for the benefit of the environment and citizens. At the same time, it invites everyone to be part of this noble crusade: to make climate action an opportunity for well-being and development.
