Earth Overshoot Day: living "on credit" with the planet through the end of the year
- So far this year, we have consumed the resources that our planet can regenerate in 12 months.
- In the last fifteen years, this date has been shortened by 3 months.
Today, August 2, 2017, humanity has consumed all the resources the planet can renew in a year, so we will live «on credit» until December 31, calculated ‘Global Footprint Network’, noting that this moment comes earlier and earlier each year.
For its calculations, Global Footprint takes into account in particular the carbon footprint, the resources consumed by fishing, livestock, crops, construction and water use.
Last year, the «day of excess» occurred on August 3. Although the rate of progression slowed somewhat in the last six years, this date continues to advance inexorably: this day went from the end of September in 1997 to August 2 this year.
According to Global Footprint Network, if global carbon emissions are reduced by at least 30 % below current levels by 2030, Earth Overshoot Day could become September 16. A positive example and one that should encourage us all is Denmark, which reduced its emissions over the past two decades. If everyone had done the same, Earth Overshoot Day would be October 3 this year.
The planet is our only home, and we are asking more of it than it can give us. A small change in our habits can make a huge difference. We have an important task ahead of us; we must build a world where we can all live within our ecological limits.
