Green competitiveness: that is the goal

In the business world, optimizing energy use and properly managing waste is not just a romantic idea or a way to contribute to the sustainability of the planet. It is also an opportunity to innovate, reduce costs, comply with regulations and build a responsible image with consumers and investors.
"Energy efficiency and waste management are key to reducing environmental impact and improving the competitiveness of organizations. To continue developing society, we need a safe environment where production, consumption and post-consumption are as efficient as possible," says Víctor Sánchez, assistant manager for corporate sustainability at the environmental consulting firm Libélula.
Sanchez recommends organizations to measure consumption and waste, use LED lighting, optimize processes to reduce energy and water consumption, separate waste, and promote
recycling. He also advises training staff and setting clear environmental goals, reviewing the supply chain, choosing sustainable partners and communicating progress in a transparent manner.
Through these actions, organizations can reduce their environmental footprint, avoid penalties and comply with national and international standards. Additionally, they can improve the work environment, as employees feel good about being part of a responsible organization that prioritizes suppliers with sustainable practices and environmental commitment.
Communication and trust
Energy efficiency and waste management are complemented by good communication. Every consumer wants to know what is behind a product. In fact, a sustainable operation helps to generate a better appreciation among consumers, investors and authorities.
Andrés Dulanto, dean of the Law Department of the Universidad Científica del Sur, warns that the main achievement of a correct communication with stakeholders is to gain their trust. "Transparent, early and constant dialogue helps stakeholders to trust a company's decisions. This is very important for public sector stakeholders, who can decide their actions based on the companies' gestures and the coherence of their actions", he points out.
Dulanto also advises establishing a clear ESG (environmental, social and governance) strategy and communication channels with authorities and communities, and providing training to personnel on good environmental practices for the company.
