Peru is a privileged country; we are one of the ten countries in the world with the largest forest area, the fourth largest tropical forest area and the second largest forest cover in Latin America.<\/p>\n

Due to their size, Peruvian forests represent an important reserve of the world's carbon. However, forest deforestation is high and has been increasing rapidly, accounting for 35% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Peru. Therefore, forest conservation is essential to curb climate change.<\/p>\n

  1. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a>Each hectare of Amazon rainforest harbors 380 tons of CO2.<\/li>\n
  2. In the Peruvian Amazon alone, some 150,000 hectares of forest are burned and cut down every year.<\/li>\n
  3. In 2000, San Martin was the department with the greatest forest loss, with 18.5% of its forest area deforested. It was followed by Amazonas, with 14%; Loreto, 13% and Jun\u00edn with 10%.<\/li>\n
  4. Forests in Peru are the largest ecosystem with 73'280,424 hectares and represent 57.3 % of the national territory. They are generally classified into tropical forests (53.9%), dry coastal forests (3.2%) and Andean relict humid forests (0.2%).<\/li>\n
  5. 97% of Peru's freshwater is found in the Amazon. Forests store it, regulate its flow, quantity and quality.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
