The\u00a0private sector<\/strong>\u00a0you can\u00a0responding to the impacts of climate change<\/strong>\u00a0by adapting its own assets, operations, supply chains and resources to\u00a0ensuring business continuity<\/strong>through financing and investment in\u00a0adaptive solutions<\/strong>or by providing adaptation solutions through products, services and technologies that increase resilience. Technologies for reduced water consumption in the face of impending droughts, loans for building reinforcement in the face of floods; these are some examples of investments and products needed to adapt.\u00a0<\/p>

According to the World Economic Forum, it is estimated that the\u00a0disaster costs<\/strong>\u00a0climate-related natural hazards around the world can reach as high as\u00a0$360 billion per year<\/strong>This generates indirect costs due to the interruption of the supply chain and other collateral economic consequences. Thus, it is necessary to\u00a0invest significantly to minimize impacts<\/strong>\u00a0and improve resilience.\u00a0<\/p>

The United Nations Environment Program estimates that the\u00a0annual investments in adaptation<\/strong>\u00a0in developing countries alone will increase from $70 billion today to $300 billion by 2030, and even\u00a0double by 2050<\/strong>. The private sector will need to shoulder a significant portion of this investment to minimize impacts and improve the resilience of their operations and their areas of influence. According to a survey by the World Economic Forum's Global Risk Report 2020, 78% of respondents believe that the private sector will need to take on a significant portion of this investment to minimize impacts and improve the resilience of their operations and areas of influence.\u00a0investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and technology<\/strong>\u00a0are essential to address climate risks.\u00a0<\/p>

A clear sign of this trend is that the\u00a0investors are demanding<\/strong>\u00a0increasingly that companies\u00a0assess and manage their climate risks adequately<\/strong>. A report from the Carbon Disclosure Initiative states that companies that fail to address climate risks may face\u00a0financial penalties<\/strong>\u00a0significant and a\u00a0decreased confidence<\/strong>\u00a0of investors. As evidence, more than 90% of the Peruvian insurance and AFP market is taking steps to familiarize themselves with and integrate the recommendations of the\u00a0Task Force for Climate-related Financial Disclosures\u00a0<\/i>(TCFD) in their investment portfolios and in the way they manage their businesses.\u00a0<\/p>

Investing in climate risk management is essential for\u00a0ensuring the long-term sustainability of the private sector<\/strong>\u00a0and the economy in general. Designing, developing and investing in initiatives that enable adaptation to climate change will generate benefits for businesses and the economy, but will also help to\u00a0closing development gaps and improving the state of the environment<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>
