International workshop for journalists in preparation for COP20
On Thursday 16, the main experts on Climate Change gathered at the “International Workshop for Journalists in preparation for COP20”, organized by the Ministry of Environment and UNEP. This event was held with the intention of strengthening the capacities of journalists from countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region, who will participate in COP20 next December.
The workshop was inaugurated by the Minister of Environment and President of COP20, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, who urged the journalists to ensure that the objectives of Climate Change are met and that an alliance must be formed to successfully push COP20 in Lima towards COP21 in Paris.
The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Christiana Figueres, was present with a video in which she highlighted the role of the press during COP 20 and the way forward in the fight against Climate Change.
The keynote address: “Understanding the Science of Climate Change” was given by the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Dr. Rajendra K. Pachauri. Pachauri, who pointed out that Peru is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world due to changes in harvests and fishing, glacier melting, decrease in rainfall, among others.
“We must learn to adapt and mitigate the changes that unfortunately are already occurring and will continue to occur for many years due to the concentration of greenhouse gases,” he said.
Pachauri also indicated that the most effective strategies are those that provide methods of adaptation and mitigation to change. He said that there are strategies to counteract this change and even said that they can be attractive to governments. “A stable climate is part of sustainable development... Climate must be integrated into development policies”. He assured that there is enough scientific knowledge to prevent Climate Change from seriously affecting us, as long as we act.
