The UN congratulates the Swiss government on its swift submission of a document pledging to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.

Switzerland became the first State Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to present its new climate action plan.

Switzerland's Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) comes well ahead of the new universal climate agreement to be signed by governments at the United Nations climate change conference in Paris in December.

The new agreement will come into force in 2020 and will set the course for keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius this century.

The Swiss government's submission says it will reduce emissions by 50 % below 1990 levels by 2030, with at least 30 % of the reduction at home and the rest in investments in external emission abatement projects.
