Positive reactions to the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement.
The U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement is a setback for the process, but it cannot stop what states, governments, academia and companies are doing. This decision isolates the U.S., undermines its competitiveness and undermines its own security by delaying mitigation actions to prevent states like Florida and New York from being hit harder by the effects of climate change.
In reaction to the U.S. exit from the agreement, key players such as China and the European Union are strengthening their alliances and political representatives, mayors, businessmen and organizations are joining forces to generate agreements and initiatives to counteract the impact of this decision. Here are some of them:
- Michael Bloomberg Coalition: thirty cities, three states, more than 80 university presidents and more than 100 companies are committed to maintaining Greenhouse Gas (GHG) limits under the guidelines of the Paris Agreement.
- Mayors' Agreement: 221 mayors representing more than 54 million Americans have signed an agreement to maintain their efforts to reduce their GHG emissions, drive a clean energy economy and fight for the environment.
- Pittsburgh is not with Trump: the city's mayor, Bill Peduto, responded “Pittsburgh will not only heed the directives of the Paris Agreement - we will work to move toward 100% of clean, renewable energy for our future, our economy and our people.”.
- Open letter to the international community: governors, mayors, university leaders and business leaders declare that they will continue to support climate action to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and invite more organizations to join the initiative to help the U.S. reach its reduction targets.
- Bloomberg-philanthropies .: announced a contribution of $$15 million to support the operations of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to help countries implement their emission reduction commitments under the Paris Agreement. Bloomberg invites more organizations to join.
- Invitation from the French President: Through a video on social media, Emmanuel Macron invited scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and responsible citizens to come to France and work together to find concrete solutions for the climate and the environment.
- G7 commitment to the Paris Agreement: The environment ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, as well as the European commissioners responsible for the climate and environment portfolios, have ratified their commitment to the rapid and effective implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
This is just the beginning of a move that could have significant impacts on our future. The world is sending a clear message; we will move forward with the common goal of slowing global warming. We invite our readers to add more initiatives. If you know of any initiative that you think should be here, please let them know at [email protected] .
