The southern region of Arequipa, which is the focus of this document, is the second in contribution to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and includes the second most populated city in Peru, as it is home to 869,351 inhabitants, according to 2015 estimates (INEI, 2012).
The impacts of climate variability (e.g. El Niño) and climate change are visibly manifested in this city, on the one hand, through glacial retreat and, on the other hand, with changes in precipitation and temperature patterns.
At the same time, there has been an increase in extreme weather events associated with heavy rains that have already been impacting the city by causing huaycos or “avenues”, that is, torrents of water caused by rainfall that come down from the heights with mud and stones, sweeping away everything in their path.
Based on the multiplicity of threats that Metropolitan Arequipa faces, CAF decided to carry out this study, which will allow the identification and prioritization of climate change adaptation measures. This capacity to manage adaptation to climate change will reduce the social, economic, territorial and environmental vulnerability of Metropolitan Arequipa.
