The DecarBOOST Project - Catalyzing Investments to Decarbonize Latin America and the Caribbean, is a three-year project launched in 2020 to support the Latin American region, and three countries in particular, Argentina, Brazil and Peru, to generate evidence to support the generation of enabling conditions for the rapid decarbonization of their economies; promoting that financing flows are consistent with climate resilient and low-carbon development.
Why do we do it?
- To contribute significantly to the development of the next generations of NDCs and as part of the ambition mechanism of the Paris Agreement;
- Promote dialogue between public and private sector stakeholders to analyze barriers to mitigation actions, propose effective instruments to overcome them and develop sectoral investment portfolios; and
- Disseminate information and results at the national level to strengthen the project's outreach and provide relevant information to key stakeholders on decarbonization trends and opportunities.
How do we do it?
To meet the objective of the project, three sets of results have been developed. The first is a barrier analysis in which countries identify the main barriers they face in moving finance onto more sustainable paths. The second product is a analysis of financial instruments and regulatory changes necessary to address some of these barriers. Finally, the third output incorporates the information from the previous two outputs and converts them into a sector investment plan which also includes investment opportunities for both the private and public sectors.
In addition, the project generates other documents of knowledge, such as the files of international input for negotiatorsThe following are some of the most important issues that each country is generating inputs to the international climate change negotiations; and annual investment reportsThe report includes an analysis of the situation in each country on some economic sectors in which the countries need to invest in order to advance in the decarbonization process.
Who do we do it with?
The project is sponsored by the International Climate Initiative - IKI, funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection - BMUV, and implemented by CentroClima|COPPE|UFRJ (Brazil), Torcuato Di Tella Foundation (Argentina), Libélula (Peru), NewClimate Institute (Germany), and SouthSouthNorth (South Africa).
