PlanCC project present at the Word Resources Forum 2014
On Monday, October 20, part of the PlanCC Project team traveled to the city of Arequipa (Peru) to participate in the World Resources Forum (WRF) 2014. As part of the event, María Elena Gutiérrez (PlanCC Project Research Coordinator) together with Jorge Vega (Director of the Transitemos Foundation and expert in the Transport Sector) and Dulia Araoz (environmental specialist at IPES and expert in the Waste Sector) organized the Workshop “Towards a Low Emission Development by 2050: Lessons Learned from Phase I of the PlanCC Project”, which was attended by more than 160 people from the public sector (MINAM, Regional Governments, Municipalities), NGOs and university professors.
During the workshop, the various reasons why Peru should move towards a low greenhouse gas emissions development were explained, among them: it would increase its GDP in the long term; generate new green investment projects; promote greater energy diversification and security; provide greater value to its forests; reduce travel time in transportation; increase the proper disposal of solid waste; reduce GHG emissions, among others.
As a result of Phase I, the PlanCC Project recommended that the most suitable scenario for the country is the “Sustainable Scenario” which contains 33 mitigation options in the energy, transportation, industrial processes, agriculture, forestry and waste sectors. This proposal is the conclusion of 2 years of work, where 400 Peruvians were involved, 5 mitigation scenarios were modeled for 2021 and 2050 and 77 mitigation options were analyzed and are currently in the process of socialization, updating and revision.
During the workshop, the importance of facilitating the “enabling conditions” (political, regulatory, institutional, financial, etc.) for mitigation options to be implemented was discussed.
The WRF is the international platform for the exchange of knowledge on resource issues, presentation of the latest scientific research and discussion on technological innovation and sustainable economic development. During WRF 2014, the discussions held at WRF 2012 (China) and WRF 2013 (Switzerland) were continued. In addition, the conclusions of the event will be submitted for consideration during the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima (COP20).
