We were present at the talk: «Incentives for Forest Conservation in Native Communities of the Peruvian Amazon», in the «Vivero» auditorium of the climate fair «Voices for Climate». This event was organized by the National Forest Conservation Program of the Ministry of Environment, which reported that it already has new adherents, 32 indigenous communities that agreed to join the plan to receive incentives in exchange for taking care of the land from deforestation. Eighteen of them have ratified the plan and 14 will do so for the first time.

The communities belong to the Awajún, Wampis, Kechwa, Asháninka, Nomatsiguenga and Yanesha ethnic groups and are located in the departments of San Martín, Amazonas, Pasco, Cusco and Junín.

Gabriel Quijandría, Vice-Minister of the Environment, said that this program is a conditional financial transfer instrument. Communities are granted 10 soles per hectare for 5 years in exchange for a conservation commitment.

“Now 18 new communities have been incorporated and in total there are 64. There are 60 thousand hectares under these agreements and with these we will have direct transfers of resources for 31 million soles at the end of the 5 years,” said Quijandría.

The Vice Minister also assured that the program does not contemplate the ownership of the lands by the central government, but that these are kept under the care of the communities that use the financing for community development activities and protection of the community's forests.
