First Day of COP20: The Grand Opening
“Let us build certainty, concrete agreements, the world is waiting for us and does not expect us to fail”, was the commitment of Manuel Pulgar Vidal, Peruvian Minister of the Environment during his inaugural speech.
The COP20 Climate Change Conference began today morning at the army headquarters in San Borja. The former president of COP 19 in Warsaw, Marcin Korolec, symbolically handed over the presidency of the COP to Pulgar-Vidal, pointing out the importance of taking on this challenge that highlights the need to make key decisions to combat climate change and its effects on the world.
In his inaugural speech, Minister Pulgar-Vidal said that “this must be the COP of wills” to reach a joint agreement, recalling that the evidence of environmental damage to the planet is more than palpable.
“This is a COP to listen and to be listened to. To all of you who are here, I ask that this be the COP of dialogue and ideas,” he added.
The executive director of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, also participated in the inauguration of COP20 and pointed out that this conference must make history and set lines of climate action as indelible as the Nazca lines.
The mayor of the city of Lima, Susana Villarán, followed with a speech in which she highlighted the importance of planning efficient cities that generate less impact.
To close the opening ceremony, Ollanta Humala, President of Peru, participated via video streaming link to welcome the representatives of the 195 participating countries. “Climate change is real and is the work of humanity. It is time to get back on the right track. Let's do our job, welcome to COP20!
A few hours later, the climate fair “Voices for Climate” was inaugurated at the Jockey Club of Peru. This open space for the general public offers exhibition and exchange areas to communicate and sensitize attendees on the importance of climate change.
Through creatively designed spaces, it reflects the diversity of proposals and initiatives related to climate change, and emphasizes the five emblematic issues prioritized in Peru's domestic agenda: Forests, Mountains and Water, Oceans, Energy and Sustainable Cities.
