Awards of the National Contest "Journalist in Green Growth".
Today was held the award ceremony of the National Contest “Journalist in Green Growth”.” promoted by PAGE Peru (Partnership for Action on Green Economy), a global initiative of the United Nations System. The event took place in the Auditorium of the Ministry of the Environment and was attended by officials from the media, universities, institutions and sponsors of the initiative.
The contest “Journalist in Green Growth”.” recognizes the work of national or foreign journalists and communicators who work in Peru, as well as communication students in the last three cycles of their careers.
Welcoming remarks were made by Miguel Ángel Beretta, National Coordinator of PAGE Peru, who highlighted the participation of the United Nations agencies and the support provided by various ministries.
He then addressed the audience Philippe Vanhuynegem, Senior Specialist in Enterprises, Cooperatives and Rural Development of the ILO Office for the Andean Countries. He highlighted three main points: the extraordinary moment in which Peru finds itself after its role during COP21, the fundamental role played by the press and finally the alliances that can be put in place for action for a green economy and the transformation of Peru. «Let us continue on the path of meeting social, economic and environmental challenges.«said Philippe.
The Vice-Minister of Strategic Development of Natural Resources of the Ministry of Environment of Peru, Gabriel Quijandría, emphasized the inevitable and obvious changes that are happening in the world and the need to communicate them to drive important initiatives. “Society is interested in deepening its knowledge on the environmental issue, it is necessary to make it more vocal, clearer and more intense.”He referred to journalists and communicators, mentioning also their relevant role in the “transition to an inevitable route”.
Irene Horejs, Ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union in Peru, she addressed the attendees with much optimism about the recent events that made history during COP21 and the urgency of communicating that being green and growing is possible today.
Horejs took the opportunity to invite reflection on the need to incorporate sustainability and efficient resource management as a fundamental part of the government plans of those candidates who will run for election during 2016. “Peru needs government plans that integrate thinking focused on the well-being of the environment”, he stated and added: “We are living in a moment in which the voice of the press is vital to raise awareness in Peru about the importance of sustainability.
Finally, Sara Paredes, The representative of the Ministry of Agriculture congratulated the initiative of the PAGE program, which seeks to recognize the efforts of journalists and communicators who dedicate their time to disseminating relevant knowledge on issues related to green growth.
