The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) presented yesterday the annual Emissions Disparity Report. This report is given within the framework of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20) to be held in a few days in Lima, where a decisive advance will be sought to achieve a global agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

To prevent the planet's temperature rise from exceeding the two-degree Celsius limit, and thus avoid the worst effects of climate change, the neutralization of carbon emissions must be achieved between mid-century and the end of the century, the report revealed.

This would ensure that the maximum amount of carbon dioxide that can be emitted into the atmosphere is not exceeded so that by 2020 the temperature does not exceed the established safety thresholds.

If the so-called carbon budget, which is 1,000 gigatons (gt) of CO2, is exceeded, it would increase the risk of serious, widespread and, in some cases, irreversible effects of climate change, warns the text, which you can consult here. here.

Along the same lines, the ways to achieve national environmental objectives and the importance of international cooperation to achieve a substantial change at the international level are analyzed.

“If we act now, we will avoid having to take extreme measures in the future to stay within agreed emission limits,” urged the UNEP Executive Director.
