In a historic event for our country's climate commitment and leadership, today the President of the Republic, Ollanta Humala Tasso, signed Supreme Decree No. 058-2016-RE ratifying the Paris Agreement, a document that represents the largest international collaboration in the history of mankind and aims to address climate change.

Peru is the first country in Latin America to ratify the Agreement. "With the ratification of the Paris Agreement we put the golden seal on this commitment sustained throughout the present administration. I thank the President of the Republic for his interest and will, expressed in the realization of the COP20 in our country, a conference that obtained the Lima Call for Climate Action, a document that encouraged the achievement of the global agreement that we ratify today," said the Minister, said the Minister of Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal.

As recalled, the Paris Agreement was adopted by 195 States Parties, including Peru and the European Union, on December 12, 2015 at COP21 in Paris. A year earlier, at COP20 in Lima, the Lima Call for Climate Action was approved after days of arduous and fruitful debate that were key to the conception of the Paris Agreement.

The head of the Environment highlighted that the Paris Agreement is probably the most important international treaty in history, since the Convention on Human Rights. "In this five-year period that will soon come to an end, there is a great imprint of this government. Peru's climate commitment and the will of a government to fight for its citizens and the world to enjoy a more habitable planet. This is the national effort to act today for a better tomorrow," said Pulgar-Vidal.

The President of the Republic pointed out that Peru has had an indisputable leadership in the global policy of strengthening the fight against climate change. "The Paris Agreement also implies the creation of a new culture, which every day we must impregnate our young people and children: this is that of caring for the environment. We have a common home and therefore we have a task to do, from our way of life, in order to generate sustainable development," said President Ollanta Humala.

The Paris Agreement aims to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2100. With mitigation and adaptation measures, and under the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, this Agreement commits the countries parties to keep the temperature increase below 2°C, aiming for a target of 1.5°C.

The event was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ana María Sánchez, and the Minister of Culture, Diana Álvarez-Calderón. It is important to note that the ratification took place at the Voices for Climate Ecological Park. This is a permanent space for participation, dialogue and learning about climate change available to citizens as one of the main legacies of COP20.
