  • In Cusco, more than half a million people will be affected by the loss of glaciers.

The National Water Authority (ANA) has communicated, through the Peruvian Glacier Inventory that in the last 40 years, 42,64% have been lost from glaciers in 18 snow-capped mountain ranges, equivalent to 870.66 square kilometers, resulting in a smaller water reserve during dry seasons.

The study also indicates that in Peru there are 2,679 glaciers located in 19 snowy mountain ranges of the Andean Cordillera with an approximate extension of 1,300 square kilometers and the Cordillera Blanca located in the northeast concentrates the largest frozen surface with 40,63% of all glaciers.

The Cordillera Blanca, an important tourist attraction for the world, is located in the northern Andean region of Ancash, 407 kilometers north of Lima. It has an area of 5,237 square kilometers and 755 glaciers in its territory, it is considered the most affected because its glaciers have an area of less than one square kilometer.

Victor Bustinza, deputy coordinator of the Program for Adaptation to Climate Change (PACC - Peru) argues that in Cusco the water system and water reserves are being affected by the loss of glaciers in that region. “Along the Vilcanota Urubamba basin, more than half a million people will be affected, in addition to productive systems, livelihoods suffer negative consequences as well as energy generation, which will be affected for years to come, indicates.

The specialist also maintains that through the PACC, work is being done on water management, because the scenarios are affected by climate change, and according to the ANA it is the small glaciers that are most exposed to global warming.
