Business and technology are solution to climate change, says CEO of World Climate Limited
With a view to COP 21, the World Climate Summit will be held in Lima, seeking to engage Peruvian businessmen in a careful environmental agenda. Jens Nielsen, representative of the event, maintains that Peru is not as backward as it is believed to be on these issues and that its private sector is fundamental in the fight against climate change.
“Climate change is a very complicated issue and you have to involve all stakeholders to solve it. The big event that will happen here in Lima is the United Nations negotiations and that is only one way to solve climate change problems. Today, you have to know what is happening at the national level, the way businesses operate because the solutions to climate change will come from businesses and their technologies,” says Nielsen.
Globally, the evolution of the ‘green’ agenda is moving towards a narrative that is more proactive than negative, inviting all stakeholders to take action.
“Countries and businesses are moving away from the way of thinking “is this bad for me or is this good for me?” because it's both. If you're an oil company, you have to think of yourself as an energy company and use your capabilities to deal with oil, gas, solar. We see countries doing that,” he says.
Nielsen is “absolutely certain” that, in 50 years, environmental responsibility will cease to be an index in large corporations and will become one of the foundations of their operations.
“Sustainability is still a very young discipline, it is very early in the life cycle and we are talking about changes that will take 20, 40, 50 years and there are still immature concepts that we are working with... We have to move sustainability beyond the management or board level and this will take time,” he said.
This requires environmental leaders in the private sector and changes, which are already taking place, in the consumer. “In 20 years, the new generations will demand sustainability. There are hundreds of studies that say that consumption patterns are changing, which is why they are asking for more and more sustainability,” he said.
