Mythbusters: Busting the myths about renewable energies
Statements such as: “renewable energies are very expensive”, “renewable energy production consumes more energy than it generates”, “renewable energy sources are not reliable”; considered as the main myths about renewable energies (RE) were exposed in the presentation of the book: “Mythbusters: Busting the myths about renewable energies”. This international publication seeks to clarify the most popular myths about renewable energies in terms of their economic viability, sustainability and technological reliability.
Currently, our energy system, based intensively on the use of coal, gas and oil, is the main contributor to climate change and environmental pollution. Faced with this scenario, RE is presented as the option that considers the social and environmental aspects, through affordable, reliable and clean energy for all.
Thus, the production costs of solar and wind technology have fallen in the last five years by 80% and 60%, respectively, and some twenty Latin American countries have favorable regulatory frameworks for the promotion of these energies (solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, marine and bioenergy). Likewise, in 2013, almost US$16 billion were invested in the sector, excluding large hydroelectric plants.
“Clarifying the most popular myths about renewable energies is a very important step for WWF in its contribution to the fight against climate change and meeting current and future energy demand,” said Tabaré Arroyo Currás, a member of WWF's Global Climate and Energy Initiative. The expert in economics and renewable energies emphasized that the publication also seeks to be a tool to achieve greater support from society in the promotion of clean and renewable energies, an essential condition for limiting global warming to less than 2°C.
One of the most popular myths on the subject is that RE is very expensive. While some have higher initial investment costs than conventional technologies, most are competitive depending on the availability of resources and political will. Some of the REs are already the lowest cost option in several Latin American countries.
The publication provides detailed information on some of the myths and highlights that caveats and difficulties are no excuse for holding back the world's ability to build a clean, energy secure future.
