Lucas Campodónico of La Bioguía: "nexos+1 values the genuine and this means a possibility for reflection".
Lucas Campodónico is co-founder and director of the B-ECO group formed by Greca, a sustainable design company, Ecomania, a non-profit civil association that promotes sustainable habits, Greenbondi, a strategy and communication consultancy that works for multinationals and governments to move towards sustainability, and La Bioguia, which has become the largest sustainable online community in Latin America with more than 17 million followers. He was the ideologist and co-director of the Rio+Vos awareness campaign that brought together 200 cities around the world. His tireless entrepreneurial spirit has earned him several awards and recognitions in recent years.
A few days before nexos+1, he comments on his participation in the experience and answers 5 questions about sustainability and companies with purpose:
1. What do you consider to be a company that has a purpose, and how does it differ from others?
The technical answer would be very easy but the reality is that money still weighs a lot and if you don't have that relationship with money you have no chance of making your company work because you are competing in a market where money is important.
A company with purpose is one that seeks to solve problems, to give money, but, above all, seeks to find the balance of the people who founded it or the people who collaborate with it every day. A company that understands human needs more than economic ones. I believe that if a person who works in a company with purpose can combine his or her personal vocations and business hobbies, the company may have a better chance than others.
A person who pollutes the Río de la Plata with enthusiasm seems more sustainable to me than someone who cleans it because it is fashionable. In the end, everything that matters is a matter of being. And the world is bad because we forget the being, we are more in the seeming than in the being and the world is bad because people are bad.
2. Tell us about your venture: What is its purpose and what kind of impacts has it had?
The purpose of the Bioguide is to promote the «happytalism» that demands responsible consumers and companies with purpose. In other words, to add common sense to supply and demand, since now there is only individual sense in our relationships. Regarding the impact of the Bioguide, I feel that the first thing it does is to sensitize and inform many people. The Bioguide connects with more than 50 million people per week, of which the vast majority are not responsible consumers, but from diverse contents they begin to connect with the subject, of which thousands started or reinforced a path from the Bioguide. There are stories of entrepreneurs, people from the corporate world, people who work in the State and obviously many NGOs that we love to spread what they do, which is very necessary.
3. How has incorporating the sustainability approach impacted your company's profitability and reputation?
La Bioguía is not a conventional enterprise, mainly because it was not an enterprise that was set with a purpose, but a purpose that became an enterprise. First it was an activist need to provide information in a positive way. That energy made the community grow, which began to demand more energy to manage it, and that is when we decided to transform ourselves into a company to build a professional team and be able to live from what we are passionate about.
What will your presentation/participation in nexos+1 be about? What will you share with the participants?
I will talk about responsible consumption but I am very interested in transmitting passion and vocation for what you do every day. “We spend a lot of time at work and it is not sustainable to do a job you don't like.” So you have to spend a lot of time thinking about what you like.
5. Why do you think it is important to have events like Nexos+1 in Latin America?
nexos+1 is a place that values the genuine and this means a possibility of reflection. In places where there is reflection and criticism, where being a community is allowed, where you don't have to sell anything, you open people up to the possibility of opening up inside. I think this is very important for change. Finally, “if only a few CEOs in the world were really convinced, things would start to change”.
