Accountability logic is very positive for the Ministry of Environment in 2014.
After 12 months of hard work, the Ministry of Environment (MINAM) presented this morning an account of the actions, campaigns and achievements that the institution has carried out in favor of the wellbeing of Peruvian citizens. The meeting was led by the Minister of the Environment, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, and Vice Ministers Gabriel Quijandría and Mariano Castro Sánchez-Moreno, who thanked the work of the different departments of MINAM, the support of international cooperation and the response of various sectors of civil society.
“MINAM's objective today is to point out the achievements, the alliances, and the challenges that remain to be resolved in the coming year. Beyond the execution of COP20, as a ministry we feel strengthened and not at all reduced in our attributions,” commented Pulgar-Vidal.
Working decisively on environmental management and the strategic development of our natural resources, he highlighted the enactment of the Ecosystem Services Law, the National Strategy against Climate Change and the creation of the National Glaciers Institute this year. “MINAM creates norms for an adequate intervention and to comply with our commitments, recognizing our potentials and limitations, but always with the clear goal of generating an inclusive development model and fighting poverty,” Quijandría commented.
Making Peru president and host of COP20, continuing the fight against mining and illegal logging, the signing of agreements and projects related to the proper management of forests, among other issues, allow us to conclude that 2014 has been a very relevant year, both for the concrete results and for the foundations it has left for the sustainable future of the country.
“We have a regulatory role, that is, MINAM is obliged to ensure that people and industries work under adequate environmental standards. However, this commitment is of the three levels of government and they required us to update the regulations of the 1990s, a goal that we have been progressively achieving,” explained Castro.
This year also stands out for having been a very active one in knowledge management for informed decision making. We have made progress in collecting key data, systematizing and making information available to the various state and private entities, which allows us to integrate the environmental component accurately into future plans. Finally, it should be mentioned that none of these efforts and achievements would be sustainable over time if we did not work jointly on education and awareness strategies, which have been a key axis in MINAM's work this year. Our campaigns include ReEduca, reciclar para abrigar; Consermar; Pon de tu Parte; De qué planeta somos; among others.
