Regeneration is an opportunity for Latin America to participate positively in the global economy.
nexos+1 will feature María Emilia Correa, co-founder of Sistema B in Latin America, internationally recognized for her dedication to promoting the concept of positive force for sustainable development in business. Her professional career is characterized by her commitment to promoting sustainability since her years as a law student at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota. She has served as director of the Natura Foundation in Colombia and of the Colombian Business Council for Sustainable Development.
María Emilia answered 5 questions on her way to nexos+1 and gave us an overview of her participation in the third edition of nexos+1.
1. What do you consider to be a company that has a purpose, and how does it differ from others?
It is how management and shareholders define the company's success. In addition to financial results, it is to see the positive impact on solving social and environmental problems.
2. Why should today's companies have a purpose?
We have a sense of urgency because the planet cannot continue with the levels of consumption we have. In relation to this, we need to produce and consume differently. But there is also a personal opportunity for those of us who work in companies, because it is the opportunity to give meaning and purpose to our work. In addition to receiving a salary, it is very important to have a sense of building the society where we are living, what legacy we are leaving, what things we are doing for others, it is a deep personal motivation. Companies allow us to do both: generate personal financial results and generate positive impacts that provide solutions to social and environmental problems.
3. How does incorporating the sustainability approach impact the company's profitability and reputation?
It depends on how we do it. It has been shown in the literature that companies that are better connected to their social and natural environment (the most committed to their environment) are the most resilient in the face of economic crises. There is empirical information that shows that a strategic connection with society and nature with intentional management makes companies more resilient. When you are more aware of where you are, when you build positive relationships with your stakeholders, when you have a problem, you will have a network that will support you.
What will your presentation/participation in nexos+1 be about? What will you share with the participants?
Many of us are looking to find purpose and meaning in our work. There are many people in companies who share this concern. Here we will talk about concrete tools to have an impact on society and nature, how to do it. Here you will find a possibility to meet others who want the same thing, who share the same interests.
5. Why do you think it is important to have events like nexos+1 in Latin America?
I have a deep conviction of the need for collaboration in Latin America because no one, alone, is capable of doing great things. Latin America needs to have a presence that contributes to the world. In that sense nexos+1 serves us to connect and realize the power of the Latin American community. It is an answer to how we can connect from the generous offer to deliver the best of each one of us and of the region.
