The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), made up of more than 90 scientists from 40 countries, released on October 8 the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C. Panmao Zhai, co-chair of Working Group I of the IPCC, said that one of the key messages of the report is that we are already experiencing the consequences of a 1°C global warming, with more extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels and shrinking Arctic sea ice. The report highlights a number of climate change impacts that could be avoided by limiting global warming to 1.5°C instead of 2°C or more. For example, if the planet's temperature rises there will be further extinction of speciesThere will be an increase in deaths and diseases caused by heat; and there will be an increase in droughts. In addition, coral reefs would decline by 70% to 90% with a global warming of 1.5°C, while virtually all coral reefs would disappear with a global warming of 2°C.
