The plan that aims to recycle 70% of plastic worldwide
An ambitious environmental project that aims to recycle 70% of plastic waste from around the globe was presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Currently, only about 14% of plastic packaging is recycled each year. If the production and treatment of this material continues, by 2050 the seas will contain more plastic by weight than fish, according to a study by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
The action plan for the New Plastics Economy was outlined on Monday 16 in Davos, with the backing of more than 40 leaders from institutions and companies with considerable impact on the environment, such as Unilever, Danone, Carrefour, Coca-Cola, Suez and Dow Chemical.
It is proposed to improve the design of packaging, reducing its weight, for example, is the first step to obtain higher recycling rates.
It will also unify different types of plastic, reduce plastic mixtures, universalize selective collection systems, improve sorting plants, reduce superfluous packaging and evaluate waste for reuse as raw materials. The system aims at environmentally sustainable manufacturing and use.
