The proposals made by countries to reduce global warming, through the Paris Agreement (COP21) are insufficient to avoid exceeding 2°C. Countries need to increase their plans to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

During the 2017 United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP23), it was agreed to establish a process to promote from non-state actors that governments increase the ambition of their actions; and on the other hand, that these non-state actors have an important role in the implementation of these plans.

In order to move this process forward, the Talanoa Dialogue (1).

The purpose of the Talanoa Dialogue is to share stories, ideas and experiences, and build empathy to make wise decisions for the common good; it fosters stability and inclusion and avoids blame and criticism, creating a safe space for the exchange of ideas and collective decision-making.

The importance of the Talanoa Dialogue, in addition to increasing the ambition of the Nationally Determined Commitments (NDCs), is that it is a non-state actor process. This means that businesses, universities, NGOs, youth, and those who wish to participate, can get involved and support governments to meet and enhance the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The role of the private sector is of utmost importance since it is known that between 60% to 70% of the NDCs will be met by this sector; in other words, its participation is essential to achieve the climate goals.

From Peru, nexos+1 is part of the Talanoa Dialogue.

nexos+1 is a platform that brings together the private sector, experts, government representatives and entrepreneurs to co-create a sustainable future. For the past 4 years this event has been held where important actors come together to promote transformative connections and propose integrated solutions to meet global challenges. This year it will be held this October 23rd and 24th in Lima.

If you wish to contribute to the Talanoa Dialogue, you can do so by accessing the website of the Talanoa Dialogue.
