  • Corporate sustainability is seen as a task that is only performed by the Social Responsibility area and that does not talk to other areas, when in fact it is transversal to the company and key to Fiduciary Responsibility.
  • The global stock market is already taking into account sustainability variables to evaluate and rate companies. In Peru, the inclusion of a sustainability report will be an obligation as of 2017 for listed companies.
  • Sustainability offers important financial benefits such as the development of new products and services, risk identification and new investment opportunities.

There is a very close link between companies and their environment; their survival depends on it. The current climate crisis requires the private sector to integrate the concept of environmental and social sustainability into core business.

On the way to nexos+1, On Wednesday, June 15, a breakfast meeting was held at the “.“CSR: The new financial indicator”. This meeting brought together finance and social responsibility managers from different companies in the country and was aimed at analyzing the role of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) as a key factor in long-term financial sustainability.

This event was attended by Francisco Avendaño, expert in finance and sustainability; María Elena Gutiérrez, research manager of Libélula; and Luciana Puente, general manager of Andean Crown SFM.

Francisco Avendaño, an expert in finance and sustainability, revealed that nowadays sustainability is not only a matter of corporate social responsibility, but also of fiduciary responsibility. The expert indicated that an important tool in the CSR area is the analysis of materiality. This includes evaluating everything that could have an impact on the company's core business. In this regard, climate change has become one of the most relevant issues.

Francisco presented the case of the company E On where they incorporated a head of sustainability in senior management, who centralizes the recommendations of a sustainability council. The recommendations are then incorporated into the goals of the different areas of the company and are part of the bonuses that are distributed for goal achievement. This system has proven to be more efficient in achieving the proposed goals, versus other similar companies that have goals, but they are not appropriated by anyone.

María Elena Gutiérrez, Libélula's research manager, also participated in the event and recognized the importance of the agreement signed during the COP21 in Paris; “after 20 years we have approved a global climate agreement with a consensus of more than 190 nations,” she said.

María Elena used the sea as an example to explain how climate impacts business. A small temperature increase in the sea, even if it is only half a degree, affects the profitability generated through this resource. It is in the interest of companies to reverse this situation. “Today, the areas of finance and CSR must work together to provide strategic value to companies.«, he added.

Luciana Puente from Andean Crown SFM, shared with the attendees some successful experiences of her professional career incorporating sustainability in the business. The specialist indicated that nowadays companies, in order to differentiate themselves, must combine resources with strategy and shared how a success story was achieved with Pacífico Seguros.

"After measuring the company's Carbon Footprint, a series of actions were carried out with all stakeholders to reduce the per capita Carbon Footprint by 30% over the course of one year.”he pointed out.

He also indicated that all the measures implemented by the company had three aspects in mind: economic, social and environmental. In addition, it is different if you implement something by obligation than on your own initiative; “has more punch, more rebound and is more cool.".

Finally, María Paz Cigarán, Libélula's manager, invited the attendees to participate of nexos+1 nexos+1 is a space for inspiration, learning, reflection and transformation, the right place to connect with a community of leaders in sustainability, generate synergies and steer projects in the right direction.
