Corporate Climate Commitment on the road to nexos+1
- Sustainability offers significant financial benefits for companies, such as the development of new products and services, risk identification and new investment opportunities.
- Breakfast attendees learned about the importance of communicating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives internally and the results that can be achieved at different levels: environmental, economic, social, work environment and reputational.
- It was emphasized that success stories should be disseminated to show the positive impact of the companies and that there should be short-term numerical indicators with immediate returns.
CSR managers met on August 9 to generate synergies and thus promote sustainability in the private sector, at the First Networking Breakfast of the Corporate Climate Commitment - 7C. LATAM, TASA, Telefónica, Backus, BCP, Prima AFP, Entel, Sodimac and UNACEM participated, as well as Peru 2021, founding partner of 7C together with Libélula.
One of the questions to be answered by those attending the breakfast was how to break down the barriers faced by CSR areas to implement projects or initiatives within their companies. In the discussion it was mentioned that some of the barriers are the existence of paradigms that exist within the areas, the difficulty in transmitting the importance of sustainability, the lack of awareness among decision-makers, the unwillingness to channel economic resources, and the lack of openness to include CSR work transversally in the company, given that nowadays these are far removed from the core business.
To face these and other challenges, factors that had led projects to be implemented successfully and with high impact were discussed. It is key to keep in mind that it is the people who make the decisions and generate the changes in any organization. Therefore, the importance of identifying allies and working together to find spaces for collaboration both at a personal level and between areas was highlighted. To achieve the commitment of employees, it is important to rely on those who are already sensitized to promote the project and spread energy through motivational challenges, recognition of innovators and visibility of the impacts achieved. Patience and perseverance are prerequisites.
The importance of communicating internally about CSR initiatives and the impacts achieved at all levels: environmental, economic, social, work environment, reputational and marketing. Another key factor is to disseminate success stories that exemplify the positive impact on similar companies, as well as having short-term numerical indicators and immediate returns such as brand value and image, among others.
Ernesto Gálmez, General Manager of Perú 2021, closed the space for reflection with three key points: Firstly, it is important to coordinate between CSR managers in order to work on joint projects that have more impact than isolated projects. Secondly, to see the public sector as an ally and even “promote public policies thanks to initiatives created jointly”. Finally, sell the idea that sustainability is not just about “the common good” but is a business issue. “If you don't do it, the business is not sustainable over time,” he mentioned.
