Sustainable Arequipa presented the region's progress in addressing climate change
- Solar energy alternatives, green infrastructure for water storage and capacity building were announced, in addition to the latest SENHAMI report on Climate Scenarios to 2030.
- The initiatives presented are part of a joint effort between the Regional Government of Arequipa, MINAM and the Swiss Cooperation, within the framework of the Climate Change Management Support Project.
During the last Climate Conference, specialists from public and private institutions met to present the progress that the current administration has been promoting as part of the Regional Climate Change Strategy, within the framework of the #AQPsostenible campaign.
The manager of the Regional Environmental Authority of the Regional Government of Arequipa, Benigno Sanz, accompanied by Rosa Morales of MINAM, Markus-Alexander Antonietti, Ambassador of Switzerland and Pia Zevallos of the Climate Change Management Support Project, announced the set of projects, studies and strategies jointly articulated on fronts such as climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The Climate Conference disseminated advances in institutional arrangements, in the generation of information, as well as advances in financing and capacity building for climate change management. Among them, studies and projects being developed by experts from sectoral institutions such as MINAM, SENAMHI, MINEM, SUNASS were presented. It also brought together private companies and organizations that have been implementing water and energy initiatives such as Cerro Verde, Lindley, SEDAPAR, GIZ, INPE, SENATI, EGASA and SEAL, among others.
From Arequipa to the world
These advances are part of the so-called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) with which Peru is contributing to the global fight against climate change within the framework of the Paris Agreement. As is known, Peru has committed to reduce with its own resources 20% of its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and this figure could be increased to 30% with international financing.
Securing water for the future
The Climate Conference included a panel in which specialists from public and private institutions discussed the importance of increasing water storage in the Camana Majes and Ocoña basin, through actions aimed at strengthening mountain ecosystems and increasing the flow of springs and springs. It is important to note that Arequipa's future development is at risk of water stress as a result of climate change.
Renewable energy initiatives
Taking advantage of Arequipa's solar and renewable energy potential is an opportunity for regional development that at the same time helps to join efforts against climate change. At the event, ARMA presented a summary of how the region has been taking advantage of solar energy, as well as the investment and financing opportunities found. In addition, public and private institutions discussed solar energy self-supply as a profitable business model and its use in different markets.
Climate scenarios for decision making
SENAMHI presented the report «Climate Scenarios and Characterization of the Present and Future Water Supply in the Ocoña and Camaná - Majes River Basins for the Arequipa Region». The study includes temperature and precipitation projections to 2050 that could serve as a tool with the potential to guide public and private efforts to manage the future impacts of climate change on water availability. This initiative is in addition to the progress developed by the regional government, which already has the Quilca Chili climate scenarios.
Climate-Responsible University and capacity building
During the Climate Conference, the actions taken to strengthen the capacities of key actors (at the government and academic levels) for sustainable development in Arequipa were presented; within the framework of an articulation between universities, public officials, private companies, researchers and experts who exchanged experiences in climate change management. Research results were presented to transform the Climate Responsible Universities and the results of courses and training to officials, experts and professionals. The following universities participated in this panel: Universidad Nacional San Agustín, Universidad Católica San Pablo and Universidad Santa María.
These advances are part of a joint effort between the Regional Government of Arequipa, MINAM and the Swiss Cooperation, in the framework of the closing of Phase 1 of the Climate Change Management Support Project.
