5 pillars of action that give hope in the face of Climate Change
On the “World Climate and Climate Change Adaptation Day”, we share 5 initiatives in key sectors of society. While it is true that efforts are still not enough to keep the temperature increase below 1.5C°, there are scalable and replicable initiatives that make us think that we have the capacity to stop this worrying trend. Here are some of them:
- Governments
In 2015, 195 countries in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, adopted the Paris Agreement, The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), an instrument by which nations commit to keep global temperature increases “well below 2C°, compared to pre-industrial levels. In addition, they indicate that efforts should be continued to limit the increase to 1.5°C and thus avoid catastrophic effects for the most vulnerable countries.
To implement the Paris Agreement, each nation has submitted - some are already in the process of implementing - its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which set out actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
- The Companies
It is undeniable that the business sector is needed to meet the emission reduction targets, and according to the Nazca Portal, Currently, more than 2,000 companies from different sectors and countries are taking actions to reduce emissions. Along the same lines, in the United States - and despite the government's decisions more than 902 companies and investors who have an annual income of total of 1.4 billion, are part of the movement “We are still in” (We are still inside) and develop initiatives to address climate change.
System B is changing the way we define business success and driving the growth of purpose-driven companies with a mission to solve social and/or environmental problems. As of October 2017, there were 2,297 B companies registered in the world, 316 in the Latin American region and more than 14 B companies in Peru.
- The Cities
Cities generate over 70% of global emissions, The contribution they make to addressing global warming is therefore very important. The organization C40, which groups more than 90 cities develop collective messages and inclusive solutions to global issues such as climate action, represent more than 650 million citizens and account for 25% of the world economy. By the same token, there are more than 2,500 cities with exclusive programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You can learn more about them here.
- Science
The research work of scientists is vital to understand the repercussions of climate change on the planet. It is therefore important that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will be presented in October 2018 a report, which is expected to set out the general methodology that countries should use to measure their emissions, a necessary contribution to the global fight against the increase of GHGs. The IPCC has presented 5 reports to date on the situation of the planet in the face of climate change, and executes an annual budget of 6 million euros, of which France will contribute 1 million from 2018.
- Protection and Conservation Initiatives
The participation of civil society is very important to protect the planet's biodiversity, which is affected by climate change. In this context, the “Equator Initiative”The United Nations program seeks to bring together governments, businesses and civil society to promote nature-based solutions for affected populations. On the other hand, reforestation is very important to mitigate the effects of climate change and at the same time to protect the ecosystems. “Bonn Challenge”.” is considered the largest ecological restoration initiative on a global scale and has the following objectives The goal is to recover a total of 150 million hectares of virgin forest by 2020.
