Check out the top 5 climate change and sustainability news stories of the week!

We share a summary of the five most important news of this week so that you do not miss them; from the recent report on the state of the climate of the World Meteorological Organization and the agreement of the MEF and MINAM to prioritize climate change issues, to the project of the first solar train in Latin America that will link Argentina, Bolivia and Peru:

News summary:

Thousands dead, millions displaced... the effects of climate change are accelerating.

“The socioeconomic impact of climate change is accelerating,” according to the World Meteorological Organization's State of the Climate 2018 report released Thursday, which finds that record concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are pushing global temperatures closer to increasingly dangerous levels.

This acceleration is the reason why the UN Secretary General has convened the Climate Summit on September 23.

“To leaders I say, don't come with speeches, come with plans,” said António Guterres in New York. Among the concrete measures, he called for accelerating the transition from fossil fuel-based energy sources to renewables. Source: UN News. See note.

MEF and Minam identify climate change priorities

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) together with the Ministry of Environment (Minam) carried out a series of decentralized working meetings with regional governments and other civil society actors such as academia and international cooperation, in order to identify their climate change priorities, according to the MEF.

These meetings were held in the regions of La Libertad (Trujillo), Loreto (Iquitos), Cusco and Lima, with a total of 5 workshops attended by more than 100 representatives of regional governments from the north, south and east, the private sector, academia and civil society. Source: Management. See note.

With warmer seas, the amount of seafood decreases

Fish populations are declining as the oceans warm, putting at risk an important source of food and income for millions of people worldwide, according to new research.

The study revealed that the amount of seafood that humans could sustainably catch decreased by 4.1 percent from 1930 to 2010, a result of climate change. Source: Clarín. See note.

First solar train in Latin America to connect Argentina to Machu Picchu

It is estimated that by August 2019 the construction of the first solar tourist train on a route from Argentina to Cusco will be completed.

The tracks that will receive the first solar train in Latin America began to be laid in February 2018. The aim of the project is to carry out tourist trips. Its starting point will be the province of Jujuy in Argentina.

A 20 km section through northern Argentina is expected to be ready by August 2019. Therefore, it will link the province of Jujuy with Purmamarca and Maimará.

Then the roads will reach Bolivia and later Cusco, the final destination will be the magical Machu Picchu. Source: Eco Inventos. See note

Copenhagen, an example in the fight against climate change

Is it possible for a city to cancel its greenhouse gas emissions?

Copenhagen intends to do so, and soon. By 2025, this once-graying industrial city aims for carbon neutrality, meaning it plans to generate more renewable energy than the dirty energy it consumes.

This is important for the rest of the world because half of humanity lives in cities and a large proportion of the gases that contribute to global warming come from cities. Adjustments and measures to curb climate change must also come from cities, which are both a problem and a potential source of solutions. Source: The New York Times. See note
